LOCALLY GROWN

OUR CATTLE ARE BORN AND RAISED RIGHT HERE ON THE RANCH.

The Wiggins Ranch cowherd consists of Brangus-Angus cows that are bred to Angus, Brangus and Hereford bulls. Half of our cows calve in the spring, and the other half calve in the fall. Our cows are the result of many years of careful breeding and genetic selections based on reproductive performance, carcass traits and disposition. Bulls are also carefully selected based on their lineage, performance data and physical appearance.

Our cattle are all born and raised on the wide-open native grasses of the Kansas Flint Hills. When each calf is born, they are weighed and tagged for identification. This information is entered into our computer system where we are able to track each animal’s lineage, growth and future offspring. Many of our cow families can be traced back in the system for more than 30 years.

RESPONSIBLY RAISED

WE FOLLOW A THOROUGH HEALTH AND NUTRITION PROGRAM.

When the calves are approximately three months old, we use horses and a feed truck to gather each pasture. Calves are vaccinated, dewormed, and branded with the ranch’s AW brand. We never give our calves growth hormones and antibiotics are given only if a calf is sick.

At roughly 9 months of age, calves are weaned and brought to the ranch headquarters. For the next few weeks they are fed grain pellets and hay in addition to the grass pasture, and they are watched carefully for any sickness. Eventually, the heifers are sorted off for replacement females for the ranch herd, and the remainder are sold to other ranches for replacements as well. Steers are also sorted for our retail beef program, and the remainder are sold at market or to a feedyard.

QUALITY BEEF

OUR RETAIL BEEF CATTLE ARE FINISHED IN OUR OWN FEEDLOT.

The cattle selected for our retail program are finished in our feedlot on the ranch. Initially, they are turned out on grass until they are moved into the feedlot based on the locker schedule. Each steer is moved into the feedlot 120 days prior to the assigned butcher day. Once in the feedlot, they are fed a customized grain ration to develop the tender, flavorful beef our customers have come to expect.

We work with local, USDA inspected butchers to process all of our beef products. The beef is dry-aged for 21 days to maximize flavor and tenderness before being processed into your favorite cuts. This process takes about three weeks, but it’s worth the wait! Finally, the beef is packaged, frozen and delivered to our freezers right here at the ranch where we bundle it together for our customers.
